Peter Berman, MD, Medical
Director
Dr. Peter Berman joined South of
Market Health Center as medical director in 2004. He came
to the center from the Boston area where he practiced
as an internist in both the private and public health
sector. In addition to his M.D., Dr. Berman received his
Masters in Public Health (MPH) from Boston University.
He has completed a residency in internal medicine and
in Community Oriented Primary Care (COPC). While Medical
Director of River Street Health Center he successfully
obtained accreditation for the health center from not
only the Massachusetts Department of Public Health but
also the coveted accreditation from the Joint Commission
on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).
As Medical Director for SMHC, Dr. Berman’s role
is to make sure that patients of the health center receive
the highest quality of care in a timely and respectful
manner. He does this by overseeing the clinical aspects,
which include introducing best practices, maintaining
a strong continuous quality improvement program, and keeping
abreast of the health care needs of our various population
groups.
Dr. Berman grew up in a suburb of Philadelphia and received
his undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University.
While at Johns Hopkins he volunteered at a local health
center as a patient advocate. In September of 1983, he
started medical school at Hahnemann University. He is
very committed to community health and is a strong voice
for community-oriented health.
"Patient care is a right, not a privilege."
