New hope, opportunity, and solutions...
On November 6, 2008, South of Market Health Center (SMHC) and Mercy Housing California (MHC) celebrated ground breaking on Westbrook Plaza -- a mixed use development which includes affordable housing and the new home for South of Market Health Center. The new health center and 49 units of affordable family housing is being constructed on 7th Street, between Howard and Folsom. Joining in the celebration were funding partners for SMHC and MHC and representatives from the federal government, the city, the business community and local residents who are among the many project supporters.
Keynote speakers, introduced by SMHCs Executive Director Charles Range and MHCs President Jane Graf, and who played a key role in bringing this project to fruition, included:
- John Murray, representing Senator Dianne Feinstein,
- Melanie Nutter, representing Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House,
- Francee Covington, Commission President, San Francisco Redevelopment Agency,
- Fred Blackwell, Executive Director, San Francisco Redevelopment Agency, and
- Wayne Batmale, Chairman, SMHC Capital Campaign Leadership Team.
Westbrook Plaza is a welcome addition to the growing population and much anticipated change in landscape occurring in the South of Market Area. The new state-of-the-art clinic facility, featuring the most current advancements in treatment environments will become SMHCs main clinic site for its medical, dental, behavioral health and pharmacy services. The development includes two separate buildings connected by a shared courtyard and community center. The five story building, fronting 7th Street, will house the two story 20,000 square foot health center with three floors of affordable family housing located above. The second building at the rear of the lot, fronting Moss Street, will include four floors of affordable family housing. Our new facility at Westbrook Plaza will double our service capacity allowing us to handle more than 40,000 patient visits a year.
The South of Market Redevelopment Project Plan (The Plan) was originally adopted to repair damage caused by the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. The Plan was later expanded to improve the overall quality of life of South of Market Area residents, including infrastructure services such as schools, transportation, safety, community centers, housing and health care. Westbrook Plaza is part of that growth plan for the South of Market Area. It's a community renewal ...bringing hope, opportunity, and solutions to an area desperately in need of all three. Strategically designed by SMHC, MHC and the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency, Westbrook Plaza reflects the overall improvement plans for South of Market Area.
