South of Market Health Center celebrated the first annual Westbrook Awards at 255 Seventh Street; the site of our soon to be constructed $15.1 million dollar health center at Westbrook Plaza. Senator Dianne Feinstein, event co-chair with Richard Blum, launched the evening, with a special toast to guest of honor Mrs. Elouise Westbrook. Honorary co-chairs for this event were Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, United States Senator The Honorable Barbara Boxer, San Francisco Mayor The Honorable Gavin Newsom, San Francisco Past Mayor The Honorable Willie L. Brown, Jr. and Actor/Producer Danny Glover.
The Westbrook Awards were created to honor the life work of Mrs. Westbrook. The evening's theme was Volunteerism and Community Service. This year's recipient of The Westbrook Award was L. Wayne Batmale, a native San Franciscan and USF Alumni who has enjoyed a lifetime of service in private fundraising for local schools and non-profits. Wayne was joined by his close family and wide circle of friends who have supported his work over the years. Mr. Batmale, the Chairperson for SMHC's Capital Campaign Leadership Team, has an expansive history of community service and volunteering with similar projects in San Francisco and Marin County.
SMHC took this opportunity to also thank and acknowledged key individuals and organizations who have demonstrated outstanding support for SMHC and its work:
- Mrs. Adelma LoPrest, a SMHC longtime benefactor
- Raymond Baxter, VP Kaiser Permanente National Community Benefit Program, for Kaiser's support and resources
- The Honorable Willie L. Brown, instrumental in the site acquisition
- Herbst Foundation, the first major donor to the new health center
Charles Range introduced Jane Graf, President of Mercy Housing California and SMHC's development partner for Westbrook Plaza. Westbrook Plaza will be a major addition to the SOMA community and will include a 20,000 square foot state-of-the-art community health clinic, 49 units of low-income housing, and an onsite retail pharmacy available to patients and local residents.
It was a grand event, well attended by over 200 persons. Rita Barela Productions helped to create a gorgeous environment in a beautifully decorated see-through tent that boldly introduced the new fall season. The events provided a perfect setting for the premiere of our documentary film honoring Mrs. Westbrook, "Tellin It Like It Is," which was Executive Produced by SMHC along with Producer/Director, Kevin Gordon. The film, which received a standing ovation, has been screened in film festivals all over Northern California.
The evening ended with a tribute reading from Mayor Gavin Newsom proclaiming October 11, 2007 Elouise Westbrook Day.
